Last Friday, I was invited to Preben’s cabin in Sweden and we spent a wonderful, calm weekend eating, drinking and relaxing. After a bit rough couple of weeks, it felt amazing to get away from the city. It’s crazy what a little change of environment can do to your mood! As we arrived quite late, we celebrated midtsommar on Saturday with the traditional herring with potatoes, eggs and aquavit.
After lunch, a little wine and a generous serving of strawberries and ice cream for dessert, we spent some time relaxing (some of us had a little nap too). The weather was not great, so while the rain has coming down heavily outside I was reading old fashion magazines and exploring a little. Preben collects dead bees, wasps and butterflies to use at exhibitions, and I couldn’t resist taking a picture of it. When you open the jar, this heavy sweet smell comes out, and although I hate insects, and think this whole thing is a bit disgusting I find it quite intriguing.
After the rain settled, the sun came out and I went looking for elderflower. I have never made elderflower extract before, and at the midsommar weekend I traded the recipe for my favourite lemon drizzle cake for an elderflower extract recipe, so there is some seriously delicious thing happening in my kitchen right now!
After two calm days in Sweden, I’m ready for the last week of work before summer vacation can finally begin. Let’s hope there will be sunshine, and not rain like they have promised!
