Nothing feels better than a visit from home. Living abroad means that I have a constant stomach ache from missing my friends and family, as they are spread out all over the world. Whenever someone comes to visit it’s all about making the most of the time we have together! Runa and I have known each other for twelve years, so no matter long we have been apart it feels like no time has passed when we are reunited, and I really cherish that. We are both in super busy periods of our lives right now, so when she came to Copenhagen last week we decided to just relax and take it easy.
We ate cheese, drank wine, baked, slept in, spent time with my friends and went for tea at Perch's. Just perfect! No fancy cocktails or dinners, no sight seeing, no nothing. Just spending time together, talking and enjoying each other’s company. On her first morning here we woke up to a rainstorm, not so perfect. But strolling through the city with a shared umbrella, ending up at Perch's for tea made for a pretty spectacular afternoon.
When you go to Perch's there are a few things that are mandatory: Indulge on their lemon curd (because it’s the best lemon curd you’ll probably ever get your hands on) and drink buckets of tea. I always go for a nice classic aromatic black tea because I think they complement the scones the best. The scones are perfectly flakey and delicious, and you can literally just tear them apart to make room for the clotted cream and that perfect lemon curd.
On Saturday morning we made saffron buns (a first for both of us) to take to a little Christmas get-together with my friends later that day.
Runa announced that she is terrible at dealing with yeast, so getting the dough perfect was all up to me. I must say that she did a quite spectacular job on kneading the dough though, she really gave it her all and made us both proud!
Waiting for the dough to rise is the boring part, so we spent the time getting ready, and just hanging out (in my window pane because it is so perfect for sitting). Yes, I'm just wearing panty hose and a t-shirt. It's saturday morning!
None of us had ever made saffron buns before, so we had to cheat a little and look how the shape was supposed to be. Runa freestyled a little too, and this one was the cutest!
Only one tiny little problem with the saffron buns though: Runa doesn’t like raisins.
We managed to make six out of the nine classical saffron bun shapes; the three last ones were impossible to make out from the pictures. I have no idea how to twist them to make them look like they should! We were happy about these (the last ones will be next year’s challenge)!
I really love weekends like this in the middle of exam chaos and I can’t wait to see Runa again when I go home for Christmas.
